Discovering the Trona Pinnacles often happens almost an accident, that is, Â you have friends who’ve been here before.Â
Look for the bumpy dirt road perhaps a half mile back. A rough, bumpy road leads for five miles to the east along a set of railroad tracks that carry loads of the whitish-gray minerals from the mining operations at Trona. Suddenly as you cross the tracks you can spot what looks like a miniature set of mountain-like spires.Â
These are the ancient tufts not unlike those at Mono Lake. The area is criss-crossed with narrow roads between the tufts, creating a maze of routes to walk around and explore the area. Evening light turns the tufas a golden color that is magical.
It is a perfect place to spend the night on the way into Death Valley.
